His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed to The New York Times that the cause of death was pneumonia. Kilmer had battled throat cancer for several years before his passing on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Kilmer rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s, starring in several box-office hits and earning a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most enigmatic leading men. His breakout role came in 1984 with “Top Secret!,” a spy parody film where he displayed both his acting chops and musical talent. He later gained widespread fame playing the cocky fighter pilot Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in 1986’s Top Gun, a role he reprised in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick despite his severe health struggles.

In 1991, Kilmer delivered a memorable performance as Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s biopic The Doors. Known for his method acting, he memorized the lyrics to all of Morrison’s songs before auditioning, fully immersing himself in the role. Roger Ebert praised his portrayal, calling it “the best thing in the movie.”

Kilmer took over the role of Bruce Wayne in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever (1995), following Michael Keaton’s departure from the franchise. While the film received mixed reviews, Kilmer’s portrayal of the Caped Crusader remains a notable entry in the Batman film legacy.

Kilmer was a devoted Christian Scientist and refrained from publicly acknowledging his cancer diagnosis for many years. He maintained a love for painting and theater, even touring with his one-man show Citizen Twain, which explored the life of Mark Twain.

Born on December 31, 1959, in Los Angeles, Kilmer was raised in Chatsworth and later attended the Juilliard School. He was married to actress Joanne Whalley from 1988 to 1996, with whom he had two children, Mercedes and Jack.
